Study on the Factors Influencing the Preference to Use Condoms in Male College Students

Park Sang-Hwa
Abstract
The purpose of this study was to measure the attitudes and knowledge about condom use, and the factors influencing the preference to use condom in male college students. The subjects (n = 999: unmarried and aged 18-27 years: mean 21.6 years) were drawn from 10 colleges ( n = 485) and 13 junior colleges ( n = 514) in Seoul metropolitan city, Kyonggi province, Taegu city, kyongsangbuk province, Taejon city and Chungchongnam province in Korea during June, 1999.
Multiple logistic regression analyses examined the relationship between intention to use condoms and selected variables including the age, military services, drinking behaviour, experience of sexual intercouse, experience of condom use, knowledge and attitude toward condom use, and frequency of contact with information on condom.
There were significant associations between the intention to use condoms and the completion of military services (OR: 1.434, p<0.05), non-experience of sexual intercourse last six months(OR: 2.273, p<0.01), experience of condom use(OR: 2.226, p<0.01) and frequent contact with information on condom use (OR: 1,760, p<0.01). Having a favorable attitude toward condom use(OR: 2.410, p<0.05) were significantly associated with future intention to use condoms, and higher knowledge on condom use (OR: 1.348, p<0.01) were more likely to do so.
